Job Description: Adabas DBA

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Adabas DBA to support development teams in the design, optimization, and maintenance of Adabas databases. The role involves working closely with application developers (Natural/COBOL), ensuring efficient database design, query optimization, and smooth migration of changes into production.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with application developers and business analysts to design and implement Adabas database structures (files, fields, descriptors, super/sub descriptors, PEs, MUs).

Provide database modeling and schema design for new applications and enhancements.

Support Natural application developers by reviewing and optimizing Adabas access logic.

Perform query tuning, access path analysis, and performance optimization.

Create and maintain database documentation, standards, and best practices.

Manage schema changes (file expansions, redefinitions, reorganization activities).

Work with system DBAs to support backup, recovery, and data refresh processes.

Troubleshoot application-related performance issues (e.g., inefficient descriptors, contention, response time).

Perform impact analysis for changes and assist with data migrations and conversions.

Use Adabas utilities (ADAORD, ADAINV, ADACMP, ADACNV, ADALOD, ADAULD) for data and structure management.

Support test and production deployments, ensuring application stability.

Participate in data integrity and security reviews.

Provide ad-hoc data extracts and support data analysis using Natural/SQL gateways where needed.

Required Skills & Experience

48 years of experience as an Adabas DBA or Application DBA.

Strong knowledge of Adabas database concepts (files, descriptors, indexes, ISNs, PEs, MUs).

Hands-on experience with Natural/COBOL programs accessing Adabas.

Proficiency with Adabas utilities (ADAORD, ADAINV, ADALOD, ADADBS, ADAULD, ADACNV).

Experience with database reorganization, compression, and performance tuning.

Understanding of transaction management, locking, and response time optimization in Adabas.

Familiarity with change management tools.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to interact with both developers and system DBAs.

Experience with Adabas SQL Gateway or Natural SQL.

Knowledge of EntireX, NaturalONE, or web service integration with Adabas.

Exposure to Adabas Cluster Services (ADASMP, Parallel Services).

Experience in modernization initiatives (e.g., moving Adabas workloads to Linux or Cloud).

Basic knowledge of z/OS JCL, TSO/ISPF, REXX scripting.
